Collocations For PTE: A Guide to Boost Your Score

While preparing for the PTE, students spend hours learning vocabulary and grammar rules, but still don’t score high. And the main reason is collocation. To shape fluency, coherence, and accuracy, you must have a good command of collocation.  If you are still wondering what these are and how they will help you, then here is everything you need to know about Collocation for PTE. Below is a clear, practical breakdown of collocations—what they are, why they matter in PTE, and how you can master them. What Exactly Are Collocations? Collocations are simply word pairs or groups of words that English tends to use together. Not because of a grammar rule, but because that’s just how the language has developed. Some combinations sound right: make a decision, not do a decision heavy rain, not strong rain take responsibility conduct research highly recommended If you’ve grown up around English, these feel obvious. But for learners, they’re easy to miss—and missing them makes sentences sound slightly unnatural, even when nothing is technically wrong. Sign Up Now for FREE Mock Test! Get Started Why Collocations for PTE Matter? Instantly improve fluency and coherence: When you already know word chunks, you don’t have to build sentences from scratch. Your speech moves faster and feels more connected. Boost your vocabulary score: PTE rewards natural, appropriate word use. Collocations show that you understand how English words actually behave together. Reduce grammar mistakes: A surprising number of “grammar errors” are really just wrong word pairings. Collocations give you safe, reliable structures. Help you understand PTE recordings and passages: Most academic content relies heavily on fixed word patterns. If you recognize them, you process meaning faster. Make your writing sound more academic: Good writing in PTE isn’t about fancy words. It’s about using common academic combinations that read naturally. How Collocations for PTE Help in Different Tasks  In Read Aloud, collocations help with natural stress and rhythm. You don’t sound robotic because the words flow as a unit. When you describe visuals or summarize information, collocations give you ready-made language for trends, causes, comparisons, and outcomes. You spend less time searching for wording. During long speaking responses, knowing common pairings keeps you moving. You hesitate less and stay focused on the message. In writing, collocations make your sentences cleaner and more professional. Even short responses benefit from them. In reading, recognizing familiar word groups helps you understand long academic sentences without slowing down. In listening, collocations act like signposts. They help you catch the speaker’s meaning more quickly because the language feels familiar. And in fill-in-the-blank tasks, collocations often tell you which option “sounds right” when two or three choices look grammatically fine. Tips to Score 79+ in PTE: Smart Strategies You Should Try

Scoring 79+ in the PTE is not about being “excellent in English.” Many native speakers struggle to score full marks because the test is built around technique, structure, and system awareness, not just language. If you understand how the exam listens to you, reads your answers, and scores your performance, 79+ becomes realistic. So here are tips to score 79+ in PTE. 1. Understand the format and scoring: The PTE uses automated scoring. It doesn’t “feel” your tone, personality, or emotion. Instead, it reads: clarity, fluency, intonation, grammar, vocabulary use, and accuracy. This means your job is not to impress but to be consistent and easy to understand. Once you stop trying to sound “perfect” and start aiming for clarity and structure, your overall score jumps significantly. 2. Build Real Fluency: Fluency is one of the most important scoring areas across all PTE exams. Fluency doesn’t mean speaking fast or using fancy words. It simply means: You don’t hesitate, You don’t repeat yourself, Your speech flows naturally, Your sentences feel connected, not broken. You can have minor errors in grammar or pronunciation and still score very high as long as the flow remains natural. How to build real fluency: Record yourself daily for a few minutes. Speak slowly but steadily; avoid sudden pauses. Practice explaining simple topics in clear sentences. 3. Strengthen Your Listening Memory A large portion of the PTE Core or Academic tests how well you comprehend information. Whether it’s an audio clip, a question prompt, or an instruction, sharper listening memory makes everything easier. Practical ways to improve this: Listen to short podcasts and summarize them in one or two lines. Play a 5–10 second audio clip and repeat it without notes. Train yourself to capture keywords, not every detail. Good listening memory directly improves your speaking fluency, listening accuracy, and even reading comprehension. 4. Have a Strong Grip on Grammar   You don’t need to use complex vocabulary to score 79+. Correct and simple grammar will also help you reach their. Grammar is an important scoring criteria of many high-weight tasks. Focus on: clear subject–verb agreement, consistent tenses, avoiding run-on sentences, and using connectors naturally. If your grammar is stable, your writing and speaking scores rise across the board because PTE rewards accuracy. 5. Build a Functional Vocabulary High scorers don’t use difficult words; they use the right words. PTE is about using language naturally, not academically. A functional vocabulary helps in every part of the test—reading comprehension, speaking clarity, writing structure, and listening interpretation. Functional vocabulary means: common verb phrases (take place, carry out, look into), simple connectors (however, therefore, meanwhile), everyday nouns (impact, solution, challenge), basic adjectives (major, effective, essential). 6. Improve Your Pronunciation Through Clarity, Not Accent The scoring engine doesn’t care about your accent. It only checks: whether your words are clearly separated, whether the stress pattern is understandable, and whether your tone sounds natural. To improve pronunciation: Read aloud for 5 minutes every day. Emphasise important words, reduce fillers. Clarity > accent. Always. 7. Train Your Eyes with Faster Reading Habits PTE requires you to read quickly and understand the meaning immediately. You’re not judged on speed, but as the exam is time-bound, you are judged on how efficiently you get the idea in a limited time. Useful habits: Read for 10–15 minutes a day from reliable sources (news, reports, articles). While performing tasks, skim main ideas and scan for important details. Find out keywords instead of reading line by line. During exam, quick comprehension helps in responding accurately. 8. Strengthen Your Writing Structure Whether you are writing a summary or any response, structure matters more than big vocabulary. An organized and structured response helps in enhancing the clarity of the respons,e which eventually helps in scoring high. Stick to: Clear topic sentences, Short supporting points, Consistent punctuation, And balanced sentence length. 9. Practice in a Real Exam-Like Environment: Most of the time, students become more anxious and panic while taking the real exam because they are not aware of the environment. And because of this, they lose focus and the fluency breaks. To avoid this: Take full-length PTE mock tests consistently  Sit for 1.5–2 hours straight during practice without breaks. Train your brain to stay sharp from start to finish. Practicing with real real-time exam simulation will make you habituated to the exam environment in advance, and you will not panic on test day. 10. Make a Practice Plan and Follow it Consistently: Consistency beats intensity. Short, targeted practice sessions every day work far better than long, irregular sessions. Prepare a plan like:  First, understand the exam format properly and check the high-weightage tasks across all the sections. Take a free mock test and understand where you are lacking. By evaluating your errors, practice more for weaker sections, which also carries high weightage. Take mock tests daily to check how much you are improving. If you’re serious about securing a high band — especially if you’re aiming for a 79+ — these strategies can make a real difference in your performance. To put these tips to score 79+ in PTE into action, start practicing on 79Score. You’ll get access to a full-length PTE mock test along with individual section-wise tests, making it easier to focus on weaker areas. You can also use our free question-wise practice to build confidence and get familiar with the real exam format. PTE Changes 2025 – Addition of New Question Types In PTE Academic

Pearson recently came up with a major update, which will be effective from 7th August 2025. If you are someone planning to give the PTE Academic on 7th August or afterward, then read this blog carefully. These PTE changes 2025 are not only just small changes, as two new question types are added. These changes are done to bring the test closer to how in real life English language is used. Read and know what the new changes are and how to streamline the preparation strategy according to it.   PTE Changes 2025 – Addition of Two New Question Types In PTE Academic   Respond to a Situation: In this question, you will be given a situation on the screen. First, you will listen and read about it, and from that situation, you have to speak your response in 40 seconds according to the question asked in the prompt. Earlier, this task was only in PTE core, but with recent PTE changes 2025, you will see this in Academic also. Prompt Length Skills Assessed No. of Questions Traits Scored Text 60 words  Speaking 2-4 Content, Oral Fluency & Pronunciation Summarize Group Discussion This one’s slightly more challenging. You’ll listen to a short discussion involving two or three speakers. Your job is to sum up what they said—without copying phrases word-for-word. The skill being tested here is how well you can pick up on key points and explain them clearly, something you might do in a university seminar or a work meeting. Prompt Length Skills Assessed No. of Questions Traits Scored  Up to 3 Minutes Listening and Speaking 2-3 Content, Oral Fluency & Pronunciation New Beep Cue in “Repeat Sentence” If you’ve ever found yourself unsure when to start speaking after the audio clip in “Repeat Sentence,” this update is for you. Pearson has added a beep sound after the audio finishes, which acts as a clear signal that it’s your turn to respond. No more guessing or second-guessing—it’s a small tweak, but it’ll make the experience a lot smoother. Sign Up Now for FREE Mock Test! Get Started Interface and Visual Changes The test interface is also getting a bit of a makeover. You’ll notice a few updates here and there when you sit for the exam: The mic check now runs twice, just to ensure everything’s working right. Pearson has removed the keyboard check, which used to be part of the initial setup. The progress bar has a new circular design instead of the usual linear one. Font sizes are slightly smaller, though most won’t notice much difference unless you’ve got an eye for design. During speaking tasks, a live waveform now shows your voice input in real time. Handy if you want to see whether your mic is picking up your voice clearly. Slightly Longer Test Duration Because of recent PTE changes in 2025, the exam time will be around 2 hours & 15 minutes, earlier it was a 2-hour format. This extra time mostly accommodates the two new speaking tasks Human Review in Select Speaking Tasks Pearson has introduced human review for seven tasks, especially in cases where your response sounds memorized or overly scripted. While the core scoring is still automated through AI, certain tasks—like Describe Image, Respond to a Situation, Summarize Group Discussion, Summarize Written Text, Re-tell lecture, Write Essay and Summarize Spoken Text—will now be reviewed by a person if needed. This move is clearly aimed at reducing template-based answers. So if you’ve been relying too heavily on robotic structures and fixed phrases, now’s the time to shift your approach. Natural, fluent responses are going to matter more than ever. What Remains the Same? Despite all these upgrades, the basics remain unchanged: The scoring system still works on a scale of 10 to 90. Result times remain quick, typically between 2–5 working days. The exam format is not changing it will be divided into four sections only – Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking Format of PTE core remains the same. Preparation Strategy According to PTE Changes 2025 Here’s how to gear up for the new format:  Get comfortable with spontaneous speaking. Practice responding to casual questions out loud. Record yourself, then listen and refine. Practice for PTE summarize group discussion on Gurully. Take updated PTE mock tests on Gurully and practice for perfection. Use beep cues when practicing Repeat Sentence. You can simulate this by setting a timer or beep yourself in audio apps. Familiarize yourself with the new layout by practicing on platforms that have updated their interface. Ditch the heavy templates. You’ll still need structure, but overused patterns will be a red flag for human reviewers. Sign Up Now for FREE Mock Test! Get Started Start Smart: Practice with the Updated Format These updates are meant to move the test closer to real-life English usage—and honestly, it’s a welcome change. But to keep up, your prep platform needs to reflect these changes too. That’s why so many students are now turning to Gurully. Gurully offers a powerful, updated practice environment that’s already tuned to the August 2025 format. Everything You Need to Know About Practicing with 79score

Discover how 79score makes PTE practice efficient and personalized.

Is 79 PTE easy to score?

Scoring 79+ in PTE is definitely possible, but it’s not “easy” for everyone. It requires consistent practice, a clear understanding of the exam format, and strong command over all four skills—Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. Many students achieve it with the right preparation strategy and regular mock tests, but it demands dedication.

How can I practice the PTE exam?

The best way to practice is by using authentic mock tests and practice platforms that replicate the real exam environment. Focus on each module separately, work on time management, and track your weak areas. Tools like 79score’s online PTE practice portal are helpful because they give real-time scoring and feedback, similar to the official test.

What is 70 points in PTE?

A PTE score of 70 is considered a good score. It roughly corresponds to an IELTS band of 6.5–7.5, which many universities and professional bodies accept for admission or visa requirements. While it may not be as high as 79+, it still qualifies for a wide range of academic and migration purposes.

Can I prepare for PTE at home?

Yes, absolutely! Many students prepare for PTE from home successfully. All you need is a reliable internet connection, access to quality practice material, and a structured study plan. Online platforms like 79score allow you to take mock tests, track your scores, and improve without needing a classroom setup.

Is PTE easy to pass?

PTE is considered easier than some traditional English tests because it’s fully computer-based and objective. However, the “ease” depends on your current English proficiency and practice. If you’re well-prepared and familiar with the test format, you’ll find it manageable.

Can I retake the PTE if I fail?

Yes, you can. There’s no limit on the number of times you can retake the PTE. You can book another attempt as soon as you receive your previous result. Many students use their score reports to identify weak areas and then improve through focused practice before reappearing.
