Pearson recently came up with a major update, which will be effective from 7th August 2025. If you are someone planning to give the PTE Academic on 7th August or afterward, then read this blog carefully. These PTE changes 2025 are not only just small changes, as two new question types are added. These changes are done to bring the test closer to how in real life English language is used.
Read and know what the new changes are and how to streamline the preparation strategy according to it.
PTE Changes 2025 – Addition of Two New Question Types In PTE Academic
Respond to a Situation:
In this question, you will be given a situation on the screen. First, you will listen and read about it, and from that situation, you have to speak your response in 40 seconds according to the question asked in the prompt. Earlier, this task was only in PTE core, but with recent PTE changes 2025, you will see this in Academic also.
Prompt Length | Skills Assessed | No. of Questions | Traits Scored |
Text 60 words | Speaking | 2-4 | Content, Oral Fluency & Pronunciation |
Summarize Group Discussion
This one’s slightly more challenging. You’ll listen to a short discussion involving two or three speakers. Your job is to sum up what they said—without copying phrases word-for-word. The skill being tested here is how well you can pick up on key points and explain them clearly, something you might do in a university seminar or a work meeting.
Prompt Length | Skills Assessed | No. of Questions | Traits Scored |
Up to 3 Minutes | Listening and Speaking | 2-3 | Content, Oral Fluency & Pronunciation |
New Beep Cue in “Repeat Sentence”
If you’ve ever found yourself unsure when to start speaking after the audio clip in “Repeat Sentence,” this update is for you. Pearson has added a beep sound after the audio finishes, which acts as a clear signal that it’s your turn to respond. No more guessing or second-guessing—it’s a small tweak, but it’ll make the experience a lot smoother.
Interface and Visual Changes
The test interface is also getting a bit of a makeover. You’ll notice a few updates here and there when you sit for the exam:
- The mic check now runs twice, just to ensure everything’s working right.
- Pearson has removed the keyboard check, which used to be part of the initial setup.
- The progress bar has a new circular design instead of the usual linear one.
- Font sizes are slightly smaller, though most won’t notice much difference unless you’ve got an eye for design.
- During speaking tasks, a live waveform now shows your voice input in real time. Handy if you want to see whether your mic is picking up your voice clearly.
Slightly Longer Test Duration
Because of recent PTE changes in 2025, the exam time will be around 2 hours & 15 minutes, earlier it was a 2-hour format. This extra time mostly accommodates the two new speaking tasks
Human Review in Select Speaking Tasks
Pearson has introduced human review for seven tasks, especially in cases where your response sounds memorized or overly scripted. While the core scoring is still automated through AI, certain tasks—like Describe Image, Respond to a Situation, Summarize Group Discussion, Summarize Written Text, Re-tell lecture, Write Essay and Summarize Spoken Text—will now be reviewed by a person if needed.
This move is clearly aimed at reducing template-based answers. So if you’ve been relying too heavily on robotic structures and fixed phrases, now’s the time to shift your approach. Natural, fluent responses are going to matter more than ever.
What Remains the Same?
Despite all these upgrades, the basics remain unchanged:
- The scoring system still works on a scale of 10 to 90.
- Result times remain quick, typically between 2–5 working days.
- The exam format is not changing it will be divided into four sections only – Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking
- Format of PTE core remains the same.
