If you’re thinking about moving to Australia, your PTE score matters way more than you probably think. It’s not just some number you get in an email from Pearson. That PTE score for Australia literally decides if immigration takes your visa seriously, if universities will actually say yes to you, and how many points you’re working with for permanent residence.
Here’s the real thing though: Australia doesn’t have just one magic PTE score that works everywhere. Most people don’t realize this going in. Your student visa needs one score, work visas want different numbers, and PR? That’s got a whole different system. Then add universities on top of that, each doing their own thing. It’s honestly a bit of a mess, but we will break it down for you.
Important Changes in August 2025
Back in August 2025, Home Affairs changed the rules on PTE requirements. PTE Academic kept the same name, but the actual numbers you need got way different.
So if you took your test on or after August 7, 2025 Pearson update, you’re dealing with the new system. If you tested before that, your old score still works until August 6, 2028; also, the government only accepts real test center results now.

English Proficiency Levels: How This Actually Works
Australia looks at English through three different levels. Here’s the thing that catches most people: Home Affairs doesn’t just look at your overall score. They go through each of your four skills one by one. So even if you crushed the overall number, one weak area can kill your whole application. This is probably the most common mistake I see.
For tests taken after August 7, 2025, here’s what you’re actually looking at:
| English level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | PR points |
| Competent | 47 | 48 | 51 | 54 | 0 |
| Proficient | 58 | 59 | 69 | 76 | 10 |
| Superior | 69 | 70 | 85 | 88 | 20 |
Compare this to the old system where everyone just needed 50, 65, or 79 across the board. That’s gone now. Writing and speaking especially got way harder. Used to be you’d need 79; now it’s 85 and 88. That’s not a small jump.
Pearson explains that your overall PTE score is based on your performance across the test, including question scores, difficulty, and scoring weightings. Check out the PTE Score Chart Guide to understand the PTE scoring system and score ranges.
PTE Score for Australia Student Visa (Subclass 500)
A student visa (Subclass 500) is how most people get into Australia for school. Your required PTE score for Australia depends on what your study plan looks like.
| Study pathway | Minimum overall PTE score |
| Direct entry into your main course | 47 |
| At least 10 weeks of ELICOS, or an eligible foundation or pathway program | 39 |
| At least 20 weeks of ELICOS | 31 |
Here’s where it gets confusing: that visa minimum and what your university wants are two completely different things. Your university doesn’t care about the government’s minimum. They set their own bar, usually much higher.
Check what your university actually wants first. Make sure whatever score you’re aiming for works for both. Don’t just aim for the visa minimum and hope the university likes it. Also look at their component requirements because some universities care about that too.

Work Visas: Post-Study Work and Skills Routes
Temporary Graduate visa (485)
What lets you work in Australia after you graduate. You need 55 overall with Listening 40, Reading 42, Writing 41, and Speaking 39. You’ve only got 12 months. Your test has to be within 12 months of your visa application.
Skills in Demand visa (482)
Totally different and depends on your job. General minimums are Listening 33, Reading 36, Writing 29, Speaking 24, but honestly this changes based on what occupation you’re in and which visa stream. You really need to verify what your specific job actually requires. Don’t just assume these numbers are right for you.
Permanent Residency: Skilled Migration Visas
When you’re going for PR through skilled migration (189, 190, 491), your English level literally gives you points or doesn’t.
- Competent English (47, 48, 51, 54): eligibility only
- Proficient English (58, 59, 69, 76): 10 points
- Superior English (69, 70, 85, 88): 20 points
Competent English? Gets you nothing. Zero points. It’s just the minimum to qualify. Proficient gets you 10 points. Superior gets you 20. When thousands of people are applying for limited spots, those extra 10 or 20 points genuinely matter. Sometimes that’s literally the difference between getting invited and waiting.
Your test needs to be from the last three years. And here’s what trips people up: they check each skill individually. You can’t have one amazing score balance out a weak one. Each skill stands completely alone.

How Long a PTE Score Is Valid for Australia
- For skilled migration (189, 190, 491), your score is valid for three years. Sounds like forever but it goes quickly. Work visas? Only 12 months.
- Universities usually accept scores up to two years old, but it varies by school. Some are cool with older scores, some aren’t. Here’s the problem: if you test for university and then want to do PR later, your score might expire. You could end up taking the test twice.
- If you’re planning a multi-step thing, work out your whole timeline first. Figure out what you need for your immediate goal, then think about PR later.
It sounds complicated because it kind of is. But thinking through your whole pathway before you book your test saves you money. One test usually doesn’t cover everything.
