A PTE score is valid for two years from the test date. That is Pearson’s rule, and it is the one printed on your score report. The body you apply to can shorten or extend it: Australian skilled migration accepts a PTE Academic result for three years, the Temporary Graduate visa wants one from the last twelve months, and IRCC, the UK Home Office and Immigration New Zealand all stop at two.

Most students treat the two-year figure on the report as the whole answer. Take the test, get the report, two years on the clock. Then the visa application opens, and the form asks for a test taken within the last twelve months, or the skilled migration points page quietly accepts a result that is nearly three years old. Same score, three different expiry dates, depending on who is reading it. That gap is where applications get delayed, and it is almost never the English that causes it.

So this guide puts every validity rule in one place, by purpose, with the date each one is counted from. Check your row, add the months, and you know exactly how long your PTE score is valid for the thing you are actually applying for.

Key Takeaways

  • Pearson keeps a PTE score valid for two years from the test date, and removes the report from your account after that.
  • Universities and most visa offices use the same two years. Australian skilled migration accepts three; the Temporary Graduate visa wants a test from the last twelve months.
  • Validity always counts from the day you sat the test, not the day the result arrived.
  • An expired score cannot be extended or renewed. The only fix is a new test.
  • If you tested on or before 6 August 2025, Home Affairs still accepts the old Australian thresholds until 6 August 2028.

What is PTE score validity?

It is the period during which a body that accepts PTE, whether that is Pearson, a university or an immigration department, will treat your result as current proof of your English. Pearson sets the baseline. Everyone else is free to be stricter or more generous, and several of them are.

PTE Score Validity by Purpose

Pearson’s two years is the baseline. Every other period in this table is set by the body you apply to, and every figure is counted from your test date unless the row says otherwise.

Purpose How long the score is valid Counted from
Pearson score report (myPTE account) 2 years Test date
University admission 2 years. Some universities also ask for the test to fall within a set period before the course starts Test date
Australia, skilled visas (189, 190, 491) 3 years Test date to the date of invitation
Australia, Temporary Graduate visa (485) Within 12 months Test date to the date of application
Australia, Student visa (500) 2 years Test date
Canada, IRCC (PTE Core for Express Entry and PR) Less than 2 years old, checked twice Test date to the day you complete your Express Entry profile, and again when you submit the PR application
UK, Home Office (PTE Academic UKVI) 2 years Test date to the date of application
New Zealand, INZ (skilled residence and work visas) 2 years Test date to the date you apply

A small but useful detail. Pearson says your score report is valid for two years from the date you took your test, and the Department of Home Affairs publishes its own periods separately, which is why the Australian rows do not match the report in your account. The report is right about Pearson’s rule and says nothing about anyone else’s. IRCC goes one step further and checks the two years twice, once when you complete your Express Entry profile and again when you submit the permanent residence application, so a result that was fine for the profile can still be refused at the second check. The UK Home Office and Immigration New Zealand both count two years from the test date to the date of application. Check the official page for your visa on the day you apply, because the figures above are the ones in force when this guide was written, and visa rules move.

Tests Taken Before the August 2025 Score Changes

Worth its own section, because this is the question nobody else answers properly. Home Affairs changed the PTE Academic score thresholds for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. If you tested on or before 6 August 2025, your result is still assessed under the old thresholds, and Home Affairs accepts it for Australian visa purposes until 6 August 2028, subject to the normal validity for your visa type. The two-year Pearson limit still applies to the report itself, so a 2025 test will have dropped out of your myPTE account before that 2028 date. Download the PDF now and keep it. For the new thresholds themselves, see our guide to the PTE score for Australia.

What Actually Expires

Three things stop working at the two-year mark, and students usually only know about the first.

  • The score report in your account. Pearson removes it from myPTE two years after the test date. There is no archive to request later, so download the PDF the day the result arrives.
  • Score sharing. You send your result to universities and visa offices through your Pearson account, free of charge and to as many institutions as you like, and they can see it around 48 hours after you send it. Once the report is gone, so is the ability to send it. Institutions that already received it keep their copy, but you cannot send it to anyone new.
  • The result as evidence. This is the one that depends on the row you are in. For a university, the result stops counting at two years. For an Australian skilled visa, it keeps counting for three. The score itself never changes; the audience does.

Your English did not get worse on the expiry date. The paperwork simply stopped. That is frustrating, but it is also predictable, which means you can plan around it.

Can You Extend a PTE Score

No. Pearson does not extend, renew, revalidate or re-issue an expired score, and there is no fee you can pay to keep an old result alive. If the result has passed the limit for your application, you sit the test again and use the new score. Pearson’s retake policy lets you book your next test as soon as your last result has arrived, up to twelve attempts in any twelve-month period, so the retake itself is rarely the bottleneck. Lead time is.

This catches people who tested early for a university offer and then applied for permanent residence two or three years later. The university was happy. The visa office needs a result inside its own window, and the old one is outside it. Expect it, and build the second test into your plan rather than discovering it at lodgement.

When to Take PTE So the Score Does Not Expire Mid-Application

Timing is the part you control. The rule is simple enough to say in one line. Test late enough that the score is still valid when the last application is lodged, and early enough that you have time for a retake if the first attempt falls short.

For a September university intake, that usually looks like this.

  • October to December, the year before. Take a free full-length mock to find your weak sections, then book the real test for January or February.
  • January to February. Sit PTE. Pearson says results usually arrive within two days and can take up to five working days, and the two-year clock starts on the test date, not the result date.
  • March to May. Apply to universities with the score. It is a few months old, well inside the two years.
  • June to August. Lodge the student visa. The score is six to eight months old. Still inside two years, with room for a processing delay.
  • Two to three years later, if you move to a skilled visa. Check the row for that visa. Australia gives you three years from the test date; Canada gives two. If you are outside the window, book a retake before you lodge, not after.

Testing in the autumn before you apply, rather than the spring, is what keeps the score alive through the whole chain. Testing eighteen months early feels organised and is genuinely the most common way to end up paying for the exam twice.

How to Check Whether Your PTE Score Is Still Valid

You do not need to contact Pearson for this. Open your score report, find the test date at the top, and do two sums. Add two years for Pearson’s limit. Then add whatever period your university or visa office uses, from the table above. The earlier of the two dates is the one that matters for that application. If you have more than one application running, each gets its own date, and the strictest one decides when you need a new test.

If the report is already gone from your account, the score has passed Pearson’s two-year limit. It may still be valid for an Australian skilled visa, but only if you kept the PDF. Without it, there is nothing to submit.

The cheapest way to keep a PTE score valid is to get the score you need on the first attempt, inside the window you planned. 79Score gives you a free full-length PTE mock test with AI scoring on every trait Pearson reports, plus section-wise tests and question-wise practice for the tasks the report flags as weak. Take one mock before you book, use the report to fix the weak areas, and sit the real test once.

FAQs

How long is a PTE score valid?

Two years from the test date. Pearson keeps the score report in your myPTE account for those two years and removes it afterwards, so download a copy as soon as the result arrives.

Is PTE Academic validity the same for universities and visas?

No. Universities and Pearson use two years. Australian skilled migration accepts PTE Academic for three years from the test date, while the Temporary Graduate visa needs a test taken within the last twelve months.

Does PTE result validity start from the test date or the result date?

The test date. Results usually arrive within two days, but the two-year count begins on the day you sat the exam, so a report received late does not give you extra time.

Can I extend the validity of my PTE result?

No. Pearson does not extend, renew or revalidate an expired score. If your result is past the limit for your application, you take the test again and submit the new score.

Is PTE Core validity different from PTE Academic?

No. PTE Core scores are also valid for two years from the test date. IRCC requires the result to be less than two years old both when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you apply for permanent residence.

Is my PTE score still valid if I took the test before the August 2025 score changes?

Yes, within the normal two years. For Australian visas, Home Affairs accepts tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 under the old thresholds until 6 August 2028, provided you kept the report.
